Repository collection owners are responsible for submitting appropriate descriptive metadata at the time of deposit for their content. Technical metadata, such as file size and MIME type is extracted and generated by the repository automatically at the time of deposit. Preview files, such as generated thumbnail images, are considered metadata under this policy.
How metadata is used and disseminated:
Metadata in the repository is exposed to the public web and to other services and agents including (but not limited to) search engines, web crawlers, repository API clients, Library One Search (ASU Library web site), and OAI-PMH harvesters.
The metadata descriptions in the digital repository are considered part of public domain as per creative common licensing and are not protected by copyright. Metadata descriptions may be accessed and used by anyone through search engines such as Google. Metadata is not available to the public domain until the metadata has been made public by the collection owner.
Repository Staff may fix or augment user-entered metadata:
ASU Digital Repository staff reserves the right to edit all metadata to conform to current metadata standards and to adopt metadata best practices for discoverability of content. Depending on service needs and repository staffing, more detailed information may be created and maintained for some resources (e.g. fixing misspellings, normalizing values, or adding subject tags to enhance discoverability).
