Barrett, The Honors College Thesis/Creative Project Collection

Barrett, the Honors College accepts high performing, academically engaged students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project, supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. The thesis or creative project allows students to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is a student’s opportunity to explore areas of academic interest with greater intensity than is possible in a single course. It is also an opportunity to engage with professors, nationally recognized in their fields and specifically interested and committed to working with honors students. This work provides tangible evidence of a student’s research, writing and creative skills to graduate schools and/or prospective employers.

In Arizona, there are virtually no established support groups or services for children on the autism spectrum and their families when experiencing the loss of a loved one. This is due to many factors, including the complexity of autism, an inconsistent belief that children with autism are capable of grieving, and a general lack of research conducted on the crossover of children with autism and grief. This proposal is based on the social work strengths perspective, in which I argue that children living with autism are capable of grieving and need support to do so. The way families and practitioners ...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) is a cult-classic television show about Buffy Summers, a vampire slayer. As the slayer, her job is to protect the earth from monsters, vampires, and demons. Though she may protect the earth from the “bad guys”, she still finds time in the day to be a teenage girl who sneaks out of the house and desperately wants a date for prom. Despite being off the air for over 10 years, Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans are still thriving on various online platforms such as Tumblr, Deviantart, and AO3. As a fan of Buffy the Vampire ...

The academic study of eSports, or professional competition through the medium of video games, has tended to focus on players' motivations to play and watch eSports as well as marketing concerns of huge eSports corporations. Instead of utilizing marketing or psychology to analyze this phenomenon, I investigate three areas of focus in accordance with available literature: the fans and their characteristics, the design of the game itself, and the relationship between fans and the game’s developer. This investigation was conducted by first examining existing literature surrounding eSports fans, then collecting public domain data such as Reddit posts, forum posts, and ...

C A N V A S is a film both compellingly honest and relevant. Spanning five countries, we find ourselves immersed within three unique stories each reflecting the reality of pain: a humanitarian weighing the realities of injustice, a mother, grieving the loss of her daughter, and a musician pondering the absence of his father. Immersed in these narratives is a vulnerable truth by which all can relate, and we begin to see the colors of a painter at work. Stroked in both suffering and healing, can we learn to trust our artist? C A N V A S tells ...

This research analyzes the rise of personal style bloggers in order to position them as new experts of fashion. I approached this thesis using case studies on three blogs that represent the evolution of the style blog to determine how these new experts have come to power and how they are using their influence to challenge traditional experts. Several theories that focus on the act of community building as well as Bourdieu’s theories on taste were employed to examine the data compiled from these case studies. I found that personal style bloggers have morphed into a crop of new fashion ...

The world of role playing games, or RPGs, is a complex, ever changing balance of egos, luck, skill, and fun. It is "always on the verge of destruction… a movement between order and chaos” (Sicart 2014, 3). This paper looks at the creation and implementation of one basic Generic Universal Role Playing System (GURPS) story skeleton, and how five groups of five to seven players created five extremely diverse, rich stories. A jointly told story is the sum of the experiences and interactions of the storytellers. The Game Master creates an ever-evolving story based on their own ideas and characters, ...

"Trauma transmission" in Holocaust Studies represents a cross-disciplinary method of studying history that focuses on how particular events impact individuals rather than on the events themselves. It refers to the transfer of trauma or its symptoms from Holocaust survivors to children of survivors (COS). In this project, I explore "echoes of trauma," such as an obsession with food or inability to show emotion, in Holocaust survivors and COS that they directly attribute to Holocaust experiences

Playable female characters in video games have become increasingly more acceptable in the mind of the average gamer. Video games like the Mass Effect series allow gamers to choose to play as either male or female. Despite the industry’s data showing that the male character is more likely to be played, vocal fans of the game will often argue that the female character is more desirable depending on the experience that the player is wanting. It is this inconsistency between the gaming industry’s data on gender choice and the fans that go against this data that leads to the present ...

While the concept of literary genres has much discussion about them, very little work has been done to address how genres emerge and grow into the cultural shorthand we know them by today. In this paper I seek to explore one specific genre of fanfiction, Omegaverse, what the genre looks like, what permutations it has undergone in the short time it has existed as a standalone genre, how the fan communities that write and read the genre have shaped it, and what this means for genre creation overall. Started less than a decade ago in the form it is recognized ...
