A distributed sensor network (DSN) is a set of spatially scattered intelligent sensors designed to obtain data across an environment. DSNs are becoming a standard architecture for collecting data over a large area. We need registration of nodal data across the network in order to properly exploit having multiple sensors. Malware forensics is a time-consuming process that involves a significant amount of data collection. To ease the load on security analysts, many attempts have been made to automate the intelligence gathering process and provide a centralized search interface. Certain of these solutions map existing relations between threats and can discover new intelligence by identifying correlations in the data. The problems addressed by the philosophy of mind arise anew when we consider the possibility of consciousness in artificial and non-biological systems. In this thesis I adapt traditional theories of mind and theories meaning in natural language to the new problems posed by these non-human systems, attempting answers to the questions: Can a given system think? During the transition between high school and college, there is an enormous decline in the number of women who pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Concept maps are teaching tools used to encourage students to utilize active learning strategies and to take responsibility for their own learning. The purpose of this two-semester study is to evaluate the use of concept maps in a junior-level Biomaterials classroom. The maps are assessed based on students’ attitude, achievement, and persistence. This project is an arrangement of three movements from Igor Stravinsky’s most famous and beloved ballets for performance by classical guitar quartet. The movements arranged were “Augurs of Spring” from The Rite of Spring (1913), “Russian Dance” from Petrouchka (1911), and “Infernal Dance of All Kastchei’s Subjects” from The Firebird (1910). Because the appeal of this music is largely based on the exciting rhythms and interesting harmonies, these works translate from full orchestra to guitar quite well. Acyl Carrier Protein (ACP) is a small, acidic protein that plays an essential role in fatty acid synthesis by elongating fatty acid chains. ACP was isolated from an extract of a modified strain of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 that contains a thioesterase and from which the acyl-ACP synthetase has been deleted. Using ammonium sulfate precipitation to isolate a crude protein fraction containing ACP, immunoblot analysis was performed to determine relative amounts of free and acylated-ACP in the cell. Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) channels are a diverse class of ion channels notable as polymodal sensors. TRPM8 is a TRP channel implicated in cold sensation, nociception, and a variety of human diseases, including obesity and cancer. Despite sustained interest in TRPM8 since its discovery in 2001, many of the molecular mechanisms that underlie function are not yet clear. We model communication among social insects as an interacting particle system in which individuals perform one of two tasks and neighboring sites anti-mimic one another. Parameters of our model are a probability of defection 2 (0; 1) and relative cost ci > 0 to the individual performing task i. Did the amount of media attention to the H1N1 flu or the information that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) disseminates about the H1N1 flu, influence individuals’ decisions to avoid public locations during the 2009-2010 H1N1 Influenza pandemic? I investigate this question using weekly-confirmed H1N1 cases from the CDC, the American Time Use Survey (ATUS), and the Google Trends weekly search volume index for certain key terms. Barrett, the Honors College accepts high performing, academically engaged students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project, supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. The thesis or creative project allows students to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is a student’s opportunity to explore areas of academic interest with greater intensity than is possible in a single course. It is also an opportunity to engage with professors, nationally recognized in their fields and specifically interested and committed to working with honors students. This work provides tangible evidence of a student’s research, writing and creative skills to graduate schools and/or prospective employers.
