Barrett, The Honors College Thesis/Creative Project Collection

Barrett, the Honors College accepts high performing, academically engaged students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project, supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. The thesis or creative project allows students to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is a student’s opportunity to explore areas of academic interest with greater intensity than is possible in a single course. It is also an opportunity to engage with professors, nationally recognized in their fields and specifically interested and committed to working with honors students. This work provides tangible evidence of a student’s research, writing and creative skills to graduate schools and/or prospective employers.

The sport of football has become one of the most widely loved and watched sports in the United States. Fans of football are extremely dedicated to the sport and form very personal, emotional attachments to teams within the National Football League. Through studying these fans, three main analysis topics will be addressed in this thesis: the established fan knowledge that creates rules within the fandom on how a fan participates and the exceptions to those rules, the need that fan’s who do not fit into the normative patterns of the fandom feel to explain their motivations, and the degree of ...

Background. Proprioception plays a large role in everyday functioning, involving both information of body position and movement (Johnson & Panayotis, 2010). Clinical assessments of proprioception are largely subjective and are not reliable measures for testing proprioception in impaired or unimpaired individuals. Recent advancements in technology and robotics have brought about new assessments that involve position matching and other paradigms. However, the results are confined to the horizontal plane and only look at a very small subset of human proprioceptive ability. Objective. The present study looks to overcome these limitations and examine differences in proprioceptive sensitivity across different directions in 3D ...

Three dimensional printing is a growing field and an excellent medium for rapid prototyping. Its expansion has accelerated over recent years due to the increased affordability of the technology. It is now at the point where the startup cost to get into the field is down to the hobbyist price point. This means that there is an extremely high demand for affordable printing media. Current media such as ABS and PLA is extremely easy to form, but expensive and petroleum intensive to create. A recycling system that could work with a large variety of waste products could change the way ...

During the summer of 2016 I had an internship in the Fab Materials Planning group (FMP) at Intel Corporation. FMP generates long-range (6-24 months) forecasts for chemical and gas materials used in the chip fabrication process. These forecasts are sent to Commodity Mangers (CMs) in a separate department where they communicate the forecast and any constraints to Intel suppliers. The intern manager of the group, Scott Keithley, created a prototype of a model to redefine how FMP determines which materials require a forecast update (forecasting cadence). However, the model prototype was complex to use, not intuitive, and did not receive ...

This project aims to explore factors influencing college students' eating behavior, and solutions to poor eating habits throughout college. I found that money, taste, and convenience are among the largest contributors to decisions college students make regarding where and what to eat. I have created a cookbook, where each recipe costs under and up to $2 to create, that falls within the acceptable macronutrient distribution range (AMDR), and that will provide a reasonable number of calories for a young adult. My create project entails 21 original recipes that have been tested, perfected, and formed into the AMDR, to provide financially ...

This research was aimed at identifying the problems of the kidney transplant market and then proposing business-minded solutions. The methodology that was used to compile research was an industry analysis, a business model canvas, the lean startup methodology, academic papers, popular culture references, previous and present marketing campaigns, an internship at a local hospital, and organ transplant databases. The problems I identified was that kidney transplant industry was favorable but had few competitors, a mounting demand with a lack of supply, a lack of public awareness, negative public perception, and incorrectly focused marketing campaigns. The solutions that I constructed were ...

Women have served in combat for centuries and in many cases, in nontraditional gender roles. Through the shroud of history, women have supported their country in times of conflict, from Sparta to Greece, and even to Persia. This case study reviews how women in combat impact gender inclusive policies in their regimes and society perception. We examine Kurdistan, Israel, and the United States because they all have been in major conflicts for the last few decades, and because there has been a significant female presence in their units on the frontlines. All three countries showed interesting effects when it came ...
