Barrett, The Honors College Thesis/Creative Project Collection


Barrett, the Honors College accepts high performing, academically engaged students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project, supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. The thesis or creative project allows students to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is a student’s opportunity to explore areas of academic interest with greater intensity than is possible in a single course. It is also an opportunity to engage with professors, nationally recognized in their fields and specifically interested and committed to working with honors students. This work provides tangible evidence of a student’s research, writing and creative skills to graduate schools and/or prospective employers.

Cinematography is the art of making motion pictures. I took on the role of cinematographer for three student film productions. The styles and process for each one varied. I worked with the directors to figure out equipment, shot lists, and schedules as well as their vision. The final products reflect the hard work put into each production. I gained experience and am able to pull from each film for my cinematography reel.

This work examines three common practices—yellowface in Cloud Atlas (2012), whitewashing in Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), and absence in Firefly (2002)—employed in popular science fiction that represent Asianness and disregard the Asian body. Though the creators purport to have progressive ideals at the center of their production choices, their works call on Techno-Orientalist and Orientalist tropes and divorce them from the Asian body, implicitly continuing the Orientalist argument of Western supremacy even in representing Asianness.

Film is not about the story one tells, but rather the manner in which that story is told. Most films only rely on the plot to progress and to move the story forward. This leaves all the other aspects of a film to remain unchanged. However, a truly cohesive film is one in which all the aspects of a film (plot, cinematography, editing, sound, music) progress together in the same direction.
