Amazing Arizona

The State of Arizona Development Board produced this film to promote tourism in about 1964. Subjects depicted include the Grand Canyon; rodeos; hotels and restaurants; fashion shows; Japanese flower gardens; and auto, horse, and dog racing, as well as many others.

CCC group shot

This collection houses diaries, correspondence, certificates, diplomas, news clippings, photographic prints, and films documenting the career of Civilian Conservation Corps chaplain Rev. Benjamin Freye. A guide to these papers is available here.

Billie Maxwell

This collection includes several examples of the music of cowgirl musician Billie Maxwell and her father's White Mountain Orchestra from Nutrioso, Arizona. Billie Maxwell's songs are solo recordings while the instrumental numbers are performed by the orchestra.

Hayden Arrives at Westward Ho

KOOL-TV coverage documenting Carl T. Hayden’s Golden Anniversary dinner at the Hotel Westward Ho in Phoenix, Arizona on November 17, 1961. President John F. Kennedy, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield, and Arizona Governor Paul Fannin appear along with a number of other Arizona and national politicians. The event program, an index with time codes, and selected clips are also presented. These materials were digitized from 2" quad videotapes in February and May of 2015 with the generous support of the Luhrs Family Endowment.

This exhibit presents over 60 individual documents from the Dorothy V. Gilbert Papers (Accession #1997-01894) describing the efforts of the Phoenix Mountains Preservation Council to establish and preserve the Phoenix Mountains Preserve. Originally presented online, it has been recast in PDF files for sustainability.

Glen Canyon

The Greene Family Collection houses biographical information, correspondence, brochures, maps, and newspaper clippings documenting the Greene family and their formation of Canyon Tours, Inc.

Yarnell

The Howard Pyle Collection contains correspondence, memoranda, minutes, diaries, scrapbooks, notebooks, printed matter, and artifacts. Although the collection dates from 1883 to 1987, the bulk of the material is derived from Pyle's political, professional, and personal activities from 1935 to 1987.

Jack Murphy

These recordings include messages to US servicemen in Vietnam made by several Arizona Congressmen in February of 1971; an interview with Barry Goldwater on August 21, 1965 in which Goldwater discusses racial tensions in California, defense spending, the Central Arizona Project, Republican party politics, and his recent back surgery; and Jack Murphy’s coverage of the 1956 TWA/United airplane crash at the Grand Canyon.

Streetcar

The Lawrence J. Fleming Papers consist primarily of correspondence, grant applications, notes, drawings, photographs, articles, promotional items, technical documentation, and other materials showing Fleming's work to establish, maintain, and expand the Arizona Street Railway Museum, including acquiring and restoring three trolley cars (#44, #116, and #504) that ran on the Phoenix Street Railway.
