With the rise of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among adults in the United States, understanding the processes of trauma, trauma related disorders, and the long-term impact of living with them is an area of continued focus for researchers. This is especially a concern in the case of current and former military service members (veterans), whose work activities and deployment cycles place them at an increased risk of exposure to trauma-inducing experiences but who have a low rate of self-referral to healthcare professionals. There is thus an urgent need for developing procedures for early diagnosis and treatment. The present study examines …

Proteins function as molecular machines which perform a diverse set of essential jobs. To use these proteins as tools and manipulate them with directed engineering, a deeper understanding of their function and regulation is needed. In the studies presented here, the chemical mechanism of a fluorescent protein and the assembly behavior of a chemo-mechanical protein were explored to better understand their operation. In the first study a photoconvertible fluorescent protein (pcFP) was examined which undergoes a photochemical transformation upon irradiation with blue light resulting in an emission wavelength change from green to red. Photo-transformable proteins have been used in high …

Ecotourism is defined as a traveling distance where tourist interact with environment and enjoy nature. It is a market segment in the tourism sector that can provide several benefits if managed properly. Although ecotourism can provide economic benefits for Saudi Arabia, there is not enough attention granted to ecotourism facilities and services in desert sites. The current study attempts to fill this gap by aiming to explore families’ perceptions of environmental desert settings that support their ecotourism needs and to identify opportunities to develop services, expand activities areas, and infrastructures. Ultimately, this study addresses families’ ecotourism needs for the promotion …

The human ankle is a critical joint required for mobility and stability of the body during static and dynamic activity. The absence of necessary torque output by the ankle due to neurological disorder or near-fatal injury can severely restrict locomotion and cause an inability to perform daily tasks. Physical Human-Robot Interaction (pHRI) has explored the potential of controlled actuators to positively impact human joints and partly restoring the required torque and stability at the joint to perform a task. However, a trade-off between agility and stability of the control technique of these devices can reduce the complete utilization of the …

Cameras have become commonplace with wide-ranging applications of phone photography, computer vision, and medical imaging. With a growing need to reduce size and costs while maintaining image quality, the need to look past traditional style of cameras is becoming more apparent. Several non-traditional cameras have shown to be promising options for size-constraint applications, and while they may offer several advantages, they also usually are limited by image quality degradation due to optical or a need to reconstruct a captured image. In this thesis, we take a look at three of these non-traditional cameras: a pinhole camera, a diffusion-mask lensless camera, …

QR decomposition (QRD) of a matrix is one of the most common linear algebra operationsused for the decomposition of a square/non-square matrix. It has a wide range of applications especially in Multiple Input-Multiple Output (MIMO) communication systems. Unfortunately it has high computation complexity { for matrix size of nxn, QRD has O(n3) complexity and back substitution, which is used to solve a system of linear equations, has O(n2) complexity. Thus, as the matrix size increases, the hardware resource requirement for QRD and back substitution increases signicantly. This thesis presents the design and implementation of a exible QRD and back substitution …

Investigation into research literature was conducted in order to understand the impacts of traditional concrete construction and explore recent advancements in 3D printing technologies and methodologies. The research project focuses on the relationship between computer modeling, testing, and verification to reduce concrete usage in flexural elements. The project features small-scale and large-scale printing applications modelled by finite element analysis software and printed for laboratory testing. The laboratory testing included mortar cylinder testing, digital image correlation (DIC), and four pointbending tests. Results demonstrated comparable performance between casted, printed solid, and printed optimized flexural elements. Results additionally mimicked finite element models regarding …

I present my work on a scalable and programmable I/O controller for region-based computing, which will be used in a rhythmic pixel-based camera pipeline. I provide a breakdown of the development and design of the I/O controller and how it fits in to rhythmic pixel regions, along with a studyon memory traffic of rhythmic pixel regions and how this translates to energy efficiency. This rhythmic pixel region-based camera pipeline has been jointly developed through Dr. Robert LiKamWa’s research lab. High spatiotemporal resolutions allow high precision for vision applications, such as for detecting features for augmented reality or face detection. High …

The ongoing Red for Ed movement in Arizona sparks an interesting discussion on its place as a social movement. This thesis examines the movement in close detail, particularly in regard to how it fits within the social movement literature’s insider/outsider framework. While partisanship is clearly important for understanding movement successes and failures, this study goes beyond party to explore through the case of Arizona how teacher movements are constrained by 1) teacher associations that operate as outsiders to state politics and 2) school districts that isolate the problem priorities (funding; teacher pay) from gaining large-scale public reaction that can be …

The relationship between settler-colonial governments and Indigenous nations has been a contentious one, filled with disingenuity and fueled by the abuse of power dynamics. Specifically, colonial governments have repeatedly used power in mapping, cultural Othering, resource control, and research methodologies to assimilate, acculturate, or otherwise dominate every aspect of Indigenous lives. A relatively recent pushback from Indigenous peoples led to the slow reclamation of sovereignty, including in the United States. Revamped federal Indian programs allegedly promote tribal self-determination, yet they paradoxically serve a vast quantity of cultures through singular blanket programs that are blind to the cultural component of Indigenous …

Through the lived experiences of Georgian queer migrants, this thesis argues that the international and national refugee laws and practices are an essential starting point but remain weak and, in some cases, even exclusionary when it comes to protecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQI) individuals. Specifically, this thesis documents the experiences of Georgian LGBTQ migrants to reveal the social, political, cultural, and economic factors in Georgia and recipient countries essential to shaping their experiences with belonging and protection. It critically explores how one’s LGBTQ identify shapes their sense of belonging in Georgia, how their identity played a direct …

This research explores tests for statistical suppression. Suppression is a statistical phenomenon whereby the magnitude of an effect becomes larger when another variable is added to the regression equation. From a causal perspective, suppression occurs when there is inconsistent mediation or negative confounding. Several different estimators for suppression are evaluated conceptually and in a statistical simulation study where we impose suppression and non-suppression conditions. For each estimator without an existing standard error formula, one was derived in order to conduct significance tests and build confidence intervals. Overall, two of the estimators were biased and had poor coverage, one worked well …

The need of organs for transplantation has become an increasing medical need due to a limited donor organ supply. Many organs fail within 10 years due to acute and chronic rejection. Acute or antibody mediated rejection leads to decreased long term graft survival and increases the need for a repeat transplant. In prior work, reducing endothelial heparan sulfation and blockade of chemokine-glycosaminoglycan (GAG) interaction with Myxomavirus-derived protein, M-T7, reduced aortic and renal graft vascular inflammation and rejection. Conditional endothelial Ndst1 deficiency and inhibition of chemokine-GAG interaction reduces early allograft damage and suggest new therapeutic options for graft rejection. Here acute …

The accurate monitoring of the bulk transmission system of the electric power grid by sensors, such as Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) and Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), is essential for maintaining the reliability of the modern power system. One of the primary objectives of power system monitoring is the identification of the snapshots of the system at regular intervals by performing state estimation using the available measurements from the sensors. The process of state estimation corresponds to the estimation of the complex voltages at all buses of the system. PMU measurements play an important role in this regard, because of the …

The quest to find efficient algorithms to numerically solve differential equations isubiquitous in all branches of computational science. A natural approach to address this problem is to try all possible algorithms to solve the differential equation and choose the one that is satisfactory to one's needs. However, the vast variety of algorithms in place makes this an extremely time consuming task. Additionally, even after choosing the algorithm to be used, the style of programming is not guaranteed to result in the most efficient algorithm. This thesis attempts to address the same problem but pertinent to the field of computational nanoelectronics, …
