Vehicles traverse granular media through complex reactions with large numbers of small particles. Many approaches rely on empirical trends derived from wheeled vehicles in well-characterized media. However, the environments of numerous bodies such as Mars or the moon are primarily composed of fines called regolith which require different design considerations. This dissertation discusses research aimed at understanding the role and function of empirical, computational, and theoretical granular physics approaches as they apply to helical geometries, their envelope of applicability, and the development of new laws. Flash memories are critical for embedded devices to operate properly but are susceptible to radiation effects, which make flash memory a key factor to improve the reliability of circuitry. This thesis describes the simulation techniques used to analyze and predict total ionizing dose (TID) effects on 90-nm technology Silicon Storage Technology (SST) SuperFlash Generation 3 devices. Silvaco Atlas is used for both device level design and simulation purposes. The simulations consist of no radiation and radiation modeling. ABSTRACT The behavior of the fission products, as they are released from fission events during nuclear reaction, plays an important role in nuclear fuel performance. Fission product release can occur through grain boundary (GB) at low burnups; therefore, this study simulates the mass transport of fission gases in a 2-D GB network to look into the effects of GB characteristics on this phenomenon, with emphasis on conditions that can lead to percolation.
