Image processing has changed the way we store, view and share images. One important component of sharing images over the networks is image compression. Lossy image compression techniques compromise the quality of images to reduce their size. To ensure that the distortion of images due to image compression is not highly detectable by humans, the perceived quality of an image needs to be maintained over a certain threshold. Determining this threshold is best done using human subjects, but that is impractical in real-world scenarios. With the advent of GPGPU, many applications are being accelerated by using CUDA programing paradigm. We are able to achieve around 10x -100x speedups by simply porting the application on to the GPU and running the parallel chunk of code on its multi cored SIMT (Single instruction multiple thread) architecture. But for optimal performance it is necessary to make sure that all the GPU resources are efficiently used, and the latencies in the application are minimized. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental neuropsychiatric condition with early childhood onset, thus most research has focused on characterizing brain function in young individuals. Little is understood about brain function differences in middle age and older adults with ASD, despite evidence of persistent and worsening cognitive symptoms. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in younger persons with ASD demonstrate that large-scale brain networks containing the prefrontal cortex are affected. Many neurological disorders, especially those that result in dementia, impact speech and language production. A number of studies have shown that there exist subtle changes in linguistic complexity in these individuals that precede disease onset. However, these studies are conducted on controlled speech samples from a specific task. This thesis explores the possibility of using natural language processing in order to detect declining linguistic complexity from more natural discourse. We use existing data from public figures suspected (or at risk) of suffering from cognitive-linguistic decline, downloaded from the Internet, to detect changes in linguistic complexity. In this thesis I introduce a new direction to computing using nonlinear chaotic dynamics. The main idea is rich dynamics of a chaotic system enables us to (1) build better computers that have a flexible instruction set, and (2) carry out computation that conventional computers are not good at it. Generating real-world content for VR is challenging in terms of capturing and processing at high resolution and high frame-rates. The content needs to represent a truly immersive experience, where the user can look around in 360-degree view and perceive the depth of the scene. The existing solutions only capture and offload the compute load to the server. But offloading large amounts of raw camera feeds takes longer latencies and poses difficulties for real-time applications.
