Description
French boxcars used to transport soldiers to the Front during World War I were marked "40/8," indicating that the car could hold either 40 men or 8 horses. After the war, veterans used a variation on the term, "40 & 8," as the name of an American Legion honor society made up of Legion members who have shown exemplary service. The society's full name is "La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux."
